Why are Singing Bowls Made of Quartz?

Crystal singing bowls are made from a powerful mineral called quartz. This mineral is so powerful that it’s used in all sorts of applications from crystal healing to computer chips. Understanding quartz crystal and the role it plays in sound healing helps us to understand why listening to singing bowls feels so good and does so much good on a deep, restorative level. So let’s get into it!

The power of quartz in modern technology

Quartz could be powering the device you’re using to read this article right now. It’s used in computer chips as a crystal oscillator as its vibrations synchronise all the computer operations. That’s because it has a piezoelectric quality. This means that it produces an electric charge when under pressure. Therefore, quartz has the ability to transmit, store, transform and amplify energy.

So, it’s used to process different vibrational frequencies of energy including electricity, sound, information and in the case of computer chips, keep the time by vibrating at exactly 60 seconds per minute. You’ll find it in a surprising number of things as one of the most used crystals such as watches, clocks, ultrasound and radios.

How quartz is used in holistic practices

Even before we knew about the technological power of quartz, way back in ancient times, it was used as a talisman and has been part of various rituals over the centuries. That has continued into modern times as quartz is a popular crystal gemstone used in healing practices.

Due to its ability to balance and transform energy, quartz is used to activate, magnify and harmonise other crystals. So, placing crystals around your singing bowls when you’re playing them is a great idea! It’s also used to support healing and harmony in us. Bring it into your meditation or intention setting.

The effects of quartz in sound healing

So what about when it comes to singing bowls? There are two main types of singing bowls. Tibetan singing bowls are traditionally made from 7 metals and are believed to have a greater effect on bone healing while crystal singing bowls are made from quartz and have a greater effect on cellular healing. This is because quartz mirrors our cellular structure.

Quartz has a crystalline structure and so do our bodies. This creates a connection between the vibrations of the bowls and the vibrations in our bodies. It’s like a geometrical web connecting us, setting off relaxing and restorative processes including moving into slower brain waves and switching on the parasympathetic nervous system!

There’s another connection because quartz is made of two elements, water and silica, and silica is also found in our bodies. This structural mirroring helps explain the deep effect we feel the bowls have on us in sound baths.

Don’t forget that quartz can transform and amplify energy. Setting intentions when playing singing bowls amplifies the energy behind them! While on the topic of energy, some people feel energetic shifts when receiving singing bowl vibrations, particularly a cleansing of the aura and rebalancing of the chakras.

Quartz also has an amazing effect when used in crystal pyramids. The powerful crystalline structure is combined with sacred geometry to produce long, rich tones that blanket us in a tingling sensation of healing.

If this has made you even more curious about singing bowls and how they could be part of your self-care practice, I provide an introduction to crystal singing bowls in my Foundation Workshop. We’ll cover how it all works, how to play the bowls and important things you need to know about looking after your bowls. It’s perfect if you’ve just bought your first bowls or are looking to buy your first bowls because you can try out a few different ones and feel which resonate with you. Follow this link to book a workshop.
